Elementary Studies at ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ

Elementary studies majors make a difference in building foundational skills that support future learning. Personal attention is a hallmark of the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ experience, where students work closely with professors and advisors to develop individual teaching goals. Upon completing this program, students do not earn an Illinois Professional Educator License but can typically teach in mission, international, charter, or private schools.

EDUC 3344 – Elementary Literacy
This course prepares pre-service teachers to demonstrate the knowledge of literacy in relation to reading, writing, speaking, and listening in primary grades. Candidates explore instructional practices related to elementary literacy, theoretical models, approaches to teaching, selecting children’s literature, state and national standards, and designing instruction. Emphasis is placed on differentiating instruction to meet the diverse learning, cultural, and behavioral needs of all learners.

Opportunities for international students


International students who plan to teach in their home country will be able to earn an Elementary Studies degree from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ without needing to complete the Illinois State Licensure requirements. International students will benefit from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s educator preparation program which incorporate best practices in education.
